A Bit of Alright

Over the years we’ve looked at several Internet bandwidth monitors and very useful they are too, especially if you need to keep tabs on your web usage. However, most of them are pretty dull, just boxes full of numbers, which are all very interesting, but not the sort of thing you’d want to look at all day. Well, here’s something with a bit more visual appeal. It’s called Bitmeter II and it displays what’s coming in and going out of your PC, in real time, via a series of colourful graphs. You can display the numbers as well, if that’s what you want. It has a number of other tricks too, there’s a web interface, so you can monitor Internet usage remotely, there are alarms to let you know when you have reached your limits, there’s an on-screen stopwatch, calculator and various display options. Laptops Aloud

It’s not long until the holiday season begins and with the widespread availability of Wi-Fi in hotels and airports, and Wireless Hotspots all over the place I’m guessing that a lot of you will be taking your laptop with you on your travels this year. The only trouble is they’re so nickable, all it takes is a momentary distraction, and it’s gone. Well, this little freeware utility isn’t going to stop you doing something daft, but if might just alert you to the fact that someone is interfering with it, and if it does get pinched, they won’t be able get at the data stored on it, at least not easily.
