iPad Alternative?
Even before the iPad was launched the crafty folks in China were busy working on fakes and knock-offs, though so far the turnout has been a bit disappointing. Now. however, news reaches us, via Engadget, of the Moonse E-700, a 7-inch tablet PC that’s rumoured to be going on sale soon for a little over £100. Apparently it will use a Cortex A8 processor, running the increasingly usable Android 1.5 software. It’ll have SD card for storage, built-in wi-fi, 5-hours battery life, 720p HD playback on its 800 x 480 resolution screen and a couple of things still on the iPad wish-list, including a built-in camera and USB port. It’s going to weigh in at a little under 400 grams, or around half the weight of an iPad. No details on a launch just yet but we wouldn’t mind betting it’ll be in the shops in plenty of time for Christmas

Microsoft Reinvents the Mouse
It’s not often that Microsoft comes up with an interesting looking peripheral, and it has been responsible for its fair share of horrors in the past but that might all be about to change with the Arc Mouse. The curved, crescent shape doesn’t look very promising but by all accounts it is very comfortable to use. The best bit is that it folds up, reducing its size by around a half, making it idea for notebook users and those with limited desktop space. Arc Mouse will be available in red or black and it goes on sale in the US in a couple of months for around £30. That’s a bit steep when you can get a perfectly decent standard mouse for a tenner but if it turns out to be as comfortable and easy to use as some early testers claim then it could well be featuring on many Christmas pressy lists.
Toshiba Designs Micro Reactor
Here’s an idea for a green Christmas present that will give everyone a warm glow in 2009. Toshiba, probably better known for making big tellies and little laptops, is also involved in heavy industry, including the design and manufacture of nuclear reactors. However, with one eye possibly on the home market, it has just come up with a Micro Reactor, capable of generating around 200kw of power, more than enough to power an apartment building, a housing estate or two, or your mansion.
It’s automatic, will not overheat and the fully self-contained design fits snugly in a space measuring 6 metres by 3 metres x 3 metres or a decent sized basement or cellar. Read more
