You knew it was coming. Gateway, to our knowledge, has become the first large PC vendor to ship most of its retail PCs with the 64-bit version of Windows Vista Home Premium. The refreshed product line also brings back an Intel quad-core processor, which had been dumped by the company in the previous product cycle.
When we wrote about Gateway’s spring retail PCs back in January of this year, it was quite obvious that, at least for that product cycle, Gateway had thrown out Intel’s Core 2 Quad Q6600 quad-core processor in favor of an AMD Phenom X4 chip. Back then, company representatives assured us that an Intel quad-core would return soon. It took some time (four months), but an Intel chip is back, but only for the pricey “FX” version. If you have a CD or DVD writer drive then sooner or later (probably sooner) you will end up with a disc that contains files that you just can’t read on your PC. CD Recovery Toolbox Free could get you out of that hole. Once installed simply pop in the errant disc and it will see what it can find, and if the file you are looking for is there, and recoverable, just tick the box and it will be saved to a folder on your hard drive. No fuss, no mess, and no cost.
Nvidia is reportedly working on a new driver for its already existing and upcoming graphics card offerings that will unleash 3D features even for 2D games. The new feature is expected to arrive in June or July this year but will only be available for Nvidia graphics card owners.
In short, once the 3D driver is installed, any PC equipped with an Nvidia graphics card will be able to run the game either in 2D mode or in 3D, without having to purchase an expensive 3D-ready monitor. However, you will still have to purchase a pair of 3D glasses, also designed in Nvidia’s laboratories.
The three-dimensional effect will be achieved by giving the user a left eye- and right eye-view of the screen. The new technology is expected to work with any gaming title, given the fact that the 3D effect is not rendered on-screen, but rather on the user’s eye via the special glasses. Electronic Arts has released a statement announcing a 10 dollar reduction in price for all those who pre-order the PC version of Mass Effect. The offer comes into play today and will last until the official launch date of the game, which is May 27 in North America and June 6 in Europe. The offer is not limited to games retailers such as GameStop, Amazon and GoGamer. Details on how the offer will work in Europe have not been released by Electronic Arts.
It seems that the 10 dollars off offer is limited to pre-orders made through retailers and does not apply to purchases made through the electronic store that EA maintains. On the other hand, the people who make the pre-order online will also benefit from some goodies, in the form of the first issue of the Dead Space comic book and of a wall sized Dead Space poster. The items are limited in number so hurry if you want these pieces of memorabilia. Read the rest of this entry »
