September 5 is the date when Microsoft will officially cut the price of the Xbox 360 line of consoles in North America, following the cut in Japan earlier in the week.
The interesting thing in the press release that details the price cut is that it puts the emphasis on the Xbox 360 Arcade and on the way it offers the promise of social interaction. It reads “Imagine if friends and families had the ability to instantly watch movies from Netflix, live out their musical fantasies through “Rock Band 2″ (Harmonix/MTV Games) and “Lips” (iNiS Corp./Microsoft Game Studios), star in their own Hollywood classics with “You’re in the Movies,” or have the power to never miss the latest episode of “Heroes” all from one device, starting at $199.” Note that they’re not promoting one hardcore game and they mention video streaming twice, which is kinda weird for what is mainly still a gaming console. This is certainly the day for announcements made by Sony. In addition to revealing a video rental service designed for the PlayStation 3, the company is also launching a few other initiatives that are designed to make its gaming console more attractive to other demographics than the “hardcore” gamer. The social aspect of the PlayStation Network is brought into focus in an effort to compete with the Xbox Live service from Microsoft.
While mentioning that the PlayStation 3 has so far shipped more than 12 million units all over the world, Kaz Hirai, President of Sony Computer Entertainment, revealed that this number is past the critical stage at which the company begins to focus on providing more content to its users rather than on extending the installed base at an accelerated rate. Additional content is intended to create loyalty amongst the player base. Read the rest of this entry »
It’s official Wii fans, the Chrystal Dynamics-developed Tomb Raider Anniversary has just shipped to retailers. According to the Eidos (the company behind the series since its early PlayStation (one) installments) Lara Croft: Tomb Raider Anniversary for Wii delivers three extra gameplay hours through exclusive Wii content.
No other version of Tomb Raider Anniversary features these three hours of extra content, but the rest is the same as with all other installments. As such, we’ve put together a list of characteristics Wii gamers should also find appealing, even more so as they’ll be maneuvering Lara using motion
sensitive controls.
“The Nintendo Wii is a hugely innovative games console and we wanted to make a special version of Anniversary to appeal to Wii owners,” said Kathryn Clements, Senior Brand Manager, when Eidos was just announcing that Anniversary was in the works for Wii. “The Wiimote & Nunchuck controller allows Wii gamers to control Lara in brand new, unique ways, and there are plenty of new features, to be revealed soon, which will ensure Anniversary really hits the spot – literally.” Read the rest of this entry »
Ever wondered where the designers of the PlayStation 3 got their inspiration from? Probably not. Actually, the only thing that could ever interest you when it comes to the machine is the software it runs and what you can download for free on its hard drive, but here’s goes anyway (for those who actually care about the PlayStation brand).
A piece we’ve come across on PS3Center.net says that Sony’s Teiyu Goto has recently revealed the design concept of the PlayStation 3. Some excerpts can be found below:
“When we designed the machine, we considered high-rise buildings, vases, and other objects that have a strong physical presence and appear sleek and new. Based on these images, we drew numerous sketches and made many mock-ups until we ended up with the present design.” Read the rest of this entry »
