Sony Unveils New Blu-Ray Notebooks
Shortly after going public with the fact that the TZ series of notebooks has been shipped with some factory issues, Sony has introduced today two new notebook series that will benefit from the latest Blu-Ray Disc technology. The newly announced notebooks are part of the company’s NS and CS series, and have been designed to provide an impressive high-definition quality.
“With these new units, Sony is now offering consumers a host of multi-media PC options to choose from,” said Mike Abary, senior vice president of VAIO product marketing at Sony Electronics. “And with a starting price of around $1,000 for the NS model, we’re expecting a new audience to experience HD entertainment on their computers.” Read more

The new Sony Ericsson W350i is a mid-level ranged mobile phone that adds to the Walkman series portfolio. As it has been a long time since a famous handset manufacturer launched a flip phone, W350i brings back the Sony Ericsson’s T series feeling. Revamped and improved, W350i’s design has that special retro look that will certainly make it as an ‘eye-catcher’ device. This is certainly the day for announcements made by Sony. In addition to revealing a video rental service designed for the PlayStation 3, the company is also launching a few other initiatives that are designed to make its gaming console more attractive to other demographics than the “hardcore” gamer. The social aspect of the PlayStation Network is brought into focus in an effort to compete with the Xbox Live service from Microsoft.
While mentioning that the PlayStation 3 has so far shipped more than 12 million units all over the world, Kaz Hirai, President of Sony Computer Entertainment, revealed that this number is past the critical stage at which the company begins to focus on providing more content to its users rather than on extending the installed base at an accelerated rate. Mobile computing has conquered both the high-end and the mainstream markets and analysts claim that the number of sold notebooks will outpace desktop systems by 2010. Hack a Laptop Challenge, Winners and Losers
In a three-day contest, held at a major security conference in Vancouver recently, teams of hackers were challenged to break their way into three laptops, running Mac OS X, Windows Vista and Ubuntu Linux operating systems, reports CNet News.
Now I know what you are thinking but you’d be wrong… On the first day all three machines repulsed attacks on the operating systems and via a network connection. The Mac Air laptop was the first to fall, however, two minutes into the start of the second day’s session. Sony Sees the Big Picture
The image sensors in most digital cameras are typically just a few millimetres in size, which is one of the reasons some old film camera hands (i.e. me) get confused when comparing digital and 35mm SLR camera lenses. Well, now Sony may have solved the problem I think with news of a new image sensor the size of a 35mm film frame. It is due to go into production this year, it packs in an impressive 24.8 megapixels and it is capable of capturing up to 6.3 images per second. It’s early days though, so there’s no model numbers or prices but it will almost certainly appear first on high-end cameras and eventually filter down to more consumer oriented models.

End of the Line for Back Projectors
Once, not so long ago, the only way to pack a really big TV screen into your living room was a back-projection TV. In their heyday there were some real monsters from the likes of Toshiba and Sony, but now it looks as though their days are numbered, with the announcement from Seiko Epson that it is to stop production of the projection gubbins that many manufacturers used to use.
You don’t have to look far to see why it has happened, these huge boxes, which were mostly filled with air, have been killed off by big screen plasmas and LCD flat screens. Read more
