iPad Alternative?
Even before the iPad was launched the crafty folks in China were busy working on fakes and knock-offs, though so far the turnout has been a bit disappointing. Now. however, news reaches us, via Engadget, of the Moonse E-700, a 7-inch tablet PC that’s rumoured to be going on sale soon for a little over £100. Apparently it will use a Cortex A8 processor, running the increasingly usable Android 1.5 software. It’ll have SD card for storage, built-in wi-fi, 5-hours battery life, 720p HD playback on its 800 x 480 resolution screen and a couple of things still on the iPad wish-list, including a built-in camera and USB port. It’s going to weigh in at a little under 400 grams, or around half the weight of an iPad. No details on a launch just yet but we wouldn’t mind betting it’ll be in the shops in plenty of time for Christmas
HTC Magic
The second device launched by the joint-venture HTC and Google – HTC Magic aka G2, suggests that the new Android-branded phones have great potential on the smartphone market. Updated to the latest firmware version, including Cupcake 1.5, HTC Magic is now shadowed by its new brother, HTC Hero, which features the new Sense GUI developed by the Taiwanese manufacturer. Still, Magic owners will be happy to find that HTC officially announced that they would be able to update their devices with the new Sense GUI, if their Magic smartphones were unlocked. Yes, those that got their devices from network carriers like T-Mobile or Vodafone will not be able to take advantage of the new GUI offered by HTC.
Announced in February 2009, HTC Magic hit the shelves three months later, in May 2009. The device is available in two classical colors: black and white. HTC Magic can be bought for around 450 USD, but that depends on location and plan. I suggest buying the unlocked version, so you can get the new graphical user interface that has been included with the Hero model. Read more
Nokia N97
The long waiting time is over and we can finally say something about the so much acclaimed N97 smartphone – the iPhone’s main rival suggested by Nokia. At first glance, besides the innovative design, the new top of the line touchscreen smartphone manufactured by the Finnish giant has been gifted with almost the same features as the older Nokia 5800 XpressMusic handset. That means it includes the same operating system, processor, HSDPA 3.6Mbps, Wi-Fi, built-in GPS receiver, and the list can go on. Still, the main things that differentiate the two handsets are the full QWERTY keyboard of N97 and the bigger touchscreen. If Nokia 5800 XpressMusic was released as the first Nokia smartphone to feature a touchscreen and an updated Symbian operating system that could go with it, the N97 should have been a piece of art from this point of view.
There were lots of bugs present in 5800′s platform and the OS seemed rather rudimentary, but Nokia managed to solve most of them by a wide sequence of firmware updates. Still, the graphical interface, as well as the basic control of the menus remained the same. This shouldn’t be that bad, but when you intend to compete with one of the most successful smartphones on the market, the iPhone, you must provide something that has at least equal value. LG GT810 and LG BL40 Spotted
One LG mobile phone that returned into the spotlight is the LG GT810. The handset, expected to come with a touchscreen display, has been spotted in the wild for the first time at the beginning of the ongoing year, and now we learn that it should be heading towards the Central and South America.
The device sports GSM, GPRS, EDGE, HSDPA connectivity, and should come with Windows Mobile 6.1 as its operating system. In addition, there is the 3-inch touch screen that can offer a 240 x 400 pixel resolution, along with Wi-Fi connectivity, a 3-megapixel camera with video recording capabilities, and 256 MB of internal memory coupled with a memory card slot with support for up to 8 GB of additional storage space. World’s Smallest Camcorder
Over the past 30 or so years I’ve written ‘World Smallest Camcorder’ so many times that it’s set in Word AutoComplete. Here’s the latest, it’s from Shenzen AEE Wireless Technology and it’s called, rather confusingly, the ‘Mini DV’. In fact it has nothing to do with the camcorder tape format of the same name, it records in AVI format on Micro SD cards.
Whether or not it is the ‘World’s Smallest’ is open to debate but it is teensy, measuring just 55 x 20 x 118mm and it tips the scales at just 50g. Up front there’s a fixed focus lens and behind that a 2 megapixel image sensor, image resolution is 640 x 480 at 30fps. Power comes form a rechargeable Li-Ion battery that lasts for up to 2 hours. Although these things have been around for quite some time now, I’ve only recently decided to give some more though and attention to the WiFi Radio concept, and I was pretty impressed to find out that’s it’s actually a lot more popular and widespread than I previously thought. Unforgettable USB Drive

It’s easily done; though and short of chaining a USB drive to your wrist sooner or later you are going to inadvertently leave one plugged into a PC. Here’s a simple little freeware program that might help jog your memory. It’s called Flash Drive Reminder and all you have to do is download the zip, extract it and copy a couple of small files to your drive. In fact there are two versions, Standard displays a reminder message when you plug the drive into a PC, and another when you log off or shut down the PC; the Quiet version just displays the logoff and shutdown messages.
