Windows 7 RTM âYear of the Tigerâ Theme Pack
What better way to celebrate the year of the tiger, than with a theme pack from Microsoft? Users running the Redmond companyâs latest iteration of the Windows client can now download a new theme via the Windows Personalization Gallery. A Windows 7 âYear of the Tigerâ theme pack is available from the software giant free of charge, and can be integrated seamlessly into the operating system.
The six new background images feature tigers, no big surprise in this regard, obviously, given the leitmotif chosen for the theme.
The year of the tiger draws its origins from the Chinese zodiac involving a total of 12 animals. It is a Chinese tradition to associate years with animal archetypes, in cycles of 12. The tiger is third in row in the enumeration which is repeated once every dozen of years. In addition to the tiger, the Chinese zodiac also contains the following animal symbols: rat, ox, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, sheep, monkey, rooster, dog and pig. Read more
Zune HD
Microsoft is introducing the fourth generation of its digital media player devices today, September 15th, 2009. Taking center stage is Zune HD, a product positioned as a direct rival for Appleâs iPod touch, and which is now available for purchase via retail channels. Zune HD models have been available for pre-order since the first half of August 2009. The 16GB flavor of Zune HD costs $219.99, while the Zune HD 32GB features a price of $289.99. At the end of the past week, leaked video demonstrations/advertisements of Zune HD offered an insight into what the digital media player brings to the market.
“Our research indicates that there’s strong consumer demand for dedicated media players and Zune HD offers visible differentiation in this market,” noted Michael Gartenberg, vice president of strategy and analysis at Interpret LLC. “Microsoft is also offering some compelling software and services with the Zune ecosystem that will help Zune HD stand out from other offerings.”

Zune HD Goes Against iPod Touch
Microsoft is planning to release an alternative to Apple’s iPod Touch devices in the fall of 2009 under the Zune brand umbrella. At least for 2009, the Redmond company will continue to sell the now traditional versions of its digital music player along with the new device, but it indicated that moving forward the evolution of Zune would be synonymous with Zune HD. The Zune HD portable media player would be made available exclusively in the US this fall, Microsoft revealed.
âThe Zune music player is an integral part of the overall Zune experience, and weâre proud to be growing and extending our offering beyond the device,â revealed Enrique Rodriguez, corporate vice president of the Microsoft TV, Video and Music Business Group. âDelivering on Microsoftâs connected entertainment vision, this news marks a turning point for Zune as it brings cross-platform experiences and premium video content to living rooms around the world.â Read more
Zune 3.0 Is Here
The fall 2008 update for Zune takes Microsoft’s iPod killer at version 3.0. The Redmond company is preparing to release a new lineup of devices, including a new 120 GB model for $249.99, but also variants of 80 GB for $229.99, 16 GB for $199; 8 GB – $149.99 and 4 GB – $129.99. But the new devices are only a part of the Zune 3.0 evolution. According to the software giant, the new models will be accompanied by the introduction of fresh color schemes: blue-on-silver and sleek all-black. And as the new Microsoft digital media players will hit the shelves, consumers will be able to enjoy new features and upgraded firmware.
âDigital music services really come alive when they help people find not only the music they know they like, but the music they didnât know they would love. With the combination of subscription, wireless access to millions of tracks, and powerful discovery features like personal recommendations and the ability to buy music from FM radio, Zune is taking the digital music experience to the next level,â explained Chris Stephenson, general manager of Global Marketing for Zune at Microsoft. How to Start building games for Xbox 360
XNA Game Studio
Platform games, shoot-em-ups, racing games, and adventure games. Peek this and poke that and the next generation of software developers were born. But why don’t people write games for fun anymore? Perhaps games and their programming languages went in different directions, we all grew up and wrote database applications. Writing simple games became hard and the immediacy and fun just got drowned out in the API calls and lines of C++. Read more
Introducing Zune 2.5
Microsoft continues to hammer away at its Zune digital media player and the services built around the device, but the evolution is largely a case of going where Apple has already taken the iPod and iTunes. On May 5, 2008, Microsoft introduced the latest update to Zune, not only adding new features and enhancements to the device itself but also evolving the Zune software, Zune Social and the Zune Marketplace. The focus of the update is to build on top of what the company started with “Zune Social” in November 2007, namely to extend the social networking community created around the device.
“Zune owners are pretty passionate, and they had a lot of great ideas for making the community more valuable to music fans. And I definitely fall into that category myself – the main reason weâre all here is we love the music,” stated Brian Seitz, a Group Marketing Manager for Zune. Zune Social offers users the possibility to interact in terms of music discovery, comments, playlist browsing, with the update bringing to the table additional capabilities including the ability to send messages to friends, explore their music collections and even drag-and-drop Zune Cards. Wired picks Zune 80 over iPod Classic
Taken from Wired:
The big conundrum this holiday season? It’s not how to escape your in-laws. (You’re trapped, fool!) It’s which media player to buy that special someone. The initial knee jerk reaction is to buy the 80GB iPod Classic. Not so fast, there hotshot. There’s also the brand new 80GB Zune 2, which is actually your better bet. The kids are getting a Zune for Christmas, even if they asked Santa for an iPod. Read more
Accessorize Zune 2.0
While claiming that the move from Zune 1.0 to Zune 2.0 was exclusively the natural evolution of the device, and not a response catalyzed by Apple releasing its new lineup of iPods in early September, Microsoft proved that it was gearing up for the long haul on the digital media player market. The face-off between the Redmond and the Cupertino companies does by no means end with the comparison between Windows and Mac OS X, but has also transitioned between digital media players since Zune hit the shelves at the end of 2006, positioned as an iPod killer.
Over one year after the launch of Zune, Microsoft’s digital media player has failed to kill the iPod in any manner, and with Apple evolving its devices a month earlier than Microsoft, the general impression is that the Cupertino-based hardware company is firmly in the lead, with competitors trailing it at a distance in terms of both market share and innovation. Zune 2.0 in Images
On October 2, Microsoft introduced the next generation of Zune digital media players. Zune 2.0 is not a response to Apple’s new lineup of iPods released just a month ago, but simply the natural evolution of the device. The Redmond company revealed for some time that it was cooking an overhaul to Zune, and the two new models unveiled are nothing more than a consequence of the planned growth. Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates and Corporate Vice President J Allard focused not only on Zune 2.0 but also on the new release of firmware for the players and the new version of the online store accompanying the devices.
“Twenty years ago we bet the company on an integrated productivity suite of word processing, spreadsheets and presentations, and we changed the way people work,” Gates said. “Today weâre making big bets on games, music, video and connecting these entertainment experiences to help change the way people play.” Microsoft is betting strong on two new features for Zune 2.0. First off, all devices will synchronize with PCs via Wi-Fi connections, streamlining the process. And on top of that, Zune 2.0 models come with the new Zune Pad, a touch-sensitive button.
